I recently went on one of Johnny's Prague Photo Tours and this is a review of my experience along with some of the photos I took.

  [ Review ](/articles/?tag=15563)

was in Prague for vacation recently and while there I took one of the evening tours for [Johnny's Prague Photo Tours](https://www.johnnyspraguetours.com/). A few years ago I started taking a photo tour/workshop when possible on vacation: I've done one in London, Rome, and now Prague and this is the first time I felt compelled to provide a review.

Booking a tour is strait forward you follow the book now button after deciding what tour and fill out the form with options for the number of photographers attending, date you want and a contact number. Jan got back to me quickly and responded to my questions.

About a week in advance of my trip I emailed again, provided my whatsapp contact and confirmed it was still on. Jan confirmed sent a link to where we would be meeting and asked if I would like help choosing lenses to bring. I passed on that, but it could be helpful for other photographers.

![Lightbulb Staircase](https://sean-smith.net/uploads/images/_1333xAUTO_fit_center-center_90_none_ns/DSCX6813-a.jpg) Lightbulb Staircase was the first photo we took on the tour

The meeting point was easy to find and only a 15 minute walk from my hotel. Jan's tours have a maximum of four participants. On this tour I was the only photographer which was a pleasant surprise for me. Jan's wife was there as well and she was learning how the tour operates. Both Jan and Carolina were very friendly and helpful.

The photo above was the first stop of the tour with this shot Jan told me the exact settings to use get the shot. Unfortunately it was a holiday and the stair case was blocked off. If I'd scheduled another day I could've taken a shot looking down. This is my favourite shot of my trip, I love a good spiral staircase, and my best performing shots on social media.

After this we walked through old town square where there was a peaceful protest happening. I suspect that there was a photo to be taken here but we skipped it because of the protest. I was in the square several times and got a lot of shots there that I was happy with. Jan also recommended climbing the Astronomical Clock Tower in the square for the view. I did and it was well worth it, better than the view from the tower at Prague Castle in my opinion.

The next stop was the Rudolfinum concert hall a Neo-Renaissance building that opened in 1885. Just like the lightbulb staircase this is a shot that I would not have found without Jan showing me. When I first got there I would have had a different composition because I didn't think to climb up on the giant circular block in the foreground.

I cannot decide between black and white or color for this one.

Our next stop was this gigantic sculpture. Personally I wasn't that interested in this stop. But after a few minutes of looking for a good composition I'm happy with this shot. I can see how other photographers would like this but it just wasn't for me.

Next we climbed up a hill to a park with a couple of lookout spots and took some elevated shots of the river and cityscape. The sky was not the greatest but if you go and get luckier with a more interesting sky the shots here would be spectactular. The view was excellent and I'm happy with my shot despite that weird pink hazy sky.

![DSCF0389 no ss](https://sean-smith.net/uploads/images/_1500xAUTO_fit_center-center_90_none_ns/DSCF0389-no-ss.jpg) A composite shot to get a boat under each arch of the bridge.

here's a another shot from a different lookout spot on that hill. Amazing how the skyis much better with the sun behind me.

The next stop on the tour was on the shore of the river looking towards the Charles bridge. The broken cobble stones make for a fantastic foreground. I also like that the duck is there and was mostly still for the long exposure. Due to the changing light time was tight to get the second to last spot in time for a beautiful blue hour shot of the Charles Bridge.

![Charles Bridge](https://sean-smith.net/uploads/images/_1500xAUTO_fit_center-center_90_none_ns/DSCX6850-color-16x9.jpg) I also process this shot in [black and white](https://sean-smith.net/uploads/images/DSCX6850-bw16-9.jpg).

it's easy to find the Charles Bridge, but once again Jan delivered with this tour by taking me to the best spot and composition at the right time. I may have been able to find this spot on my own, but being on the tour guaranteed me this shot and I am planning to print it large on my wall.

For the final spot on the tour we crossed over the Charles Bridge and took this stunning shot of Prague Castle and Malá Strana at Dusk.

             ![DSCF0409](https://sean-smith.net/uploads/images/_1500xAUTO_fit_center-center_90_none_ns/DSCF0409.jpg)

## Conclusion

I thoroughly enjoyed my time on this tour. Both Jan and Carolina were engaging, friendly and helpful with getting the best composition or making adjustments to settings.

I have several shots that I intend to print large and put on my wall. Each location was well chosen with instructions on how to get the best composition as well as sample shots to look at on Jan's phone.

The conversation flowed naturally over the 3.5 hour walk and I had the best time on a tour I've taken so far. Jan also offers tours outside of Prague in the Czech Republic and some destination adventure photography tours. In the future I hope to go on another tour with Jan.
